Level One – provides a complete introduction and immersion into the classical Vidya (knowledge) of Vedic Astrology or Jyotisha. The course is detailed and comprehensive to enable students to become proficient practitioners of Jyotisha if desired.
Students will learn to read charts with accuracy and gain real, time-tested and applicable methods for success in Vedic chart interpretation.
Level One is a prerequisite for Level Two and further advanced study. You must have this foundation course to attend my specialty courses online or my 3-day live trainings with our large community of already established students here in California.
Level Two will pick up on chart interpretation and techniques for deepening your ability to read Karma practically. We will deepen our study of astrological Yogas and learn how integrate the wealth of info that you learned in Level 1. It will be scheduled for August, on the same weekday and time.

- Level 1 is the first part of an optional 3-year program, in 6 Levels (semesters).
- I start a new Level 1 Course each January.
- Each Level is 18 weeks – 2 hours per class
- Classes are Jan to May and then Aug to Dec. each year making two levels per year.
- Each Level is a stand-alone component.
- If you need to miss a class, all classes are recorded and archived and are accessible 24/7– as long as you are my student, or up to a year from the start of your last course.
- Some homework is given and a few quizzes to see your progress.
- Little to no math is needed in the course.
- All classes are via Zoom and a link is sent out to you before each class, but the link remains the same
- I have assisstants who can tutor you one-on-one for a discounted rate to ensure that you have access to personal training and getting your questions answered outside of the classroom when needed.
- I teach classical Indian astrology, but also include western astronomical information as well.
- Software suggestions will be given.
Course Topics
The Vedic Tradition
The historical and cultural background of Jyotish and its’ allied subjects. Including an introduction to the Veda, Vedanga, Jyotish Shaḍanga, Jyotish Skandha and the major classical written works of Jyotish.
The Mysteries of Karma
We will study the Four Types of Karma and how they relate to Jyotisha. Understanding the karmic model is essential to understanding the grander Vedic vision and in approaching the interpretation of a horoscope.
Astronomical Basics
All the necessary components of the sky and the heavens both from a western astronomical perspective, and also from an eastern astrological or Jyotishical perspective. You will get all that you need to look at the heavens and understand what you are seeing and to look at a horoscope and see how that maps the very sky above
Astrological Fundamentals
All the information you will need on the fundamental building blocks of Jyotish: Grahas (planets),the Rashis (constellations) the Bhavas (houses),the Nakshatras (lunar constellations), Natural Benefics and Malefics, Temporal Benefics and Malefics, Planetary Strength/Weakness, Planetary Relationships, Planetary Aspects, Significators, Vimshottari Dasha, an introduction to Yogas (Planetary Combinations), Sanskrit terms for all essential components, and so much more…
Chart Analysis & Interpretation Fundamentals
Learn how to put it all together—you will learn a well-structured hierarchy of emphasis and pro-forma designed to give you the confidence you need in beginning interpretation.
Methods Of Study & Preparation
You will also receive information on how to study and more readily memorize information, as well as how to prepare for a basic chart analysis.

Meet Your Teacher - Steven Highburger
Steven has been deeply immersed in Vedic Studies since the 90’s and is a teacher of Vedic Astrology, Ayurveda, Hasta, Vastu and Sanskrit.
Steven studied intensively with the world renowned master of Vedic Traditions, Hart deFouw, and also received the highest level of certification from the American College of Vedic Astrology (A.C.V.A.). Steven is a graduate of the Ayurvedic Institute of New Mexico where he spent 4 years studying classical Ayurveda under the direction of Dr. Vasant Lad.
He is on Faculty at Mt Madonna College of Ayurveda and maintains a busy private practice in San Anselmo, CA.
